phoenix4: (facepalm)
We are temporarily past the worst of the layoff ickiness at work, knock on wood. The most recent cut is our Order Entry/Inventory person, who at least has two months to try to teach the few survivors how to do the hundreds of things she does. We have such a small office that everyone wears multiple hats that have nothing to do with our published job responsibilities. We just do what has to be done to keep things going, and that's going to get a lot harder from here. Especially since the guy we kept (despite having more accounting experience) made four mistakes on one journal entry Friday, and seldom seems to be willing to put forth the effort like the rest of us do.

(Sorry, had to take a break to do emergency tech support for my dad, who came over to buy a new laptop this afternoon. Using my wireless DSL connection, I updated his Windows, installed antivirus software, and set up his USB modem so he could get online with his dial-up Juno account when he got home. What I didn't do: update the drivers on the USB Modem to work with Windows 7. Damn it. Now I have to mail him a CD with the new drivers tomorrow, because he doesn't have a thumb drive to move them from his desktop to the new laptop. I really wish he'd shell out the extra $13 a month for broadband, but I understand that it isn't a necessity for him like it is for us. We are so spoiled...)

M's extended family had their annual Christmas party yesterday, with bonus Rob Your Neighbor white elephant gift exchange. It was a lot of fun, a lot of food, and the Chocolate Caramel Cake and Cream Cheese Corn I took for our contributions were acceptably depleted. We came home with a hand-held pinball game (M) and a box of chocolate Turtle candy (me), and a plate of assorted Christmas cookies. I promptly went to bed for two hours to sleep off the sugar (I ate a piece of cake and a piece of pecan pie at the party). Unlike normal people, I don't get a sugar rush; I just get dizzy and tired. I spent the rest of the evening watching Tivo'd episodes of Good Eats and Mission: Organization. Following along on House or CSI:NY is just beyond my abilities post-sugar crash. I do have 16 inches done on my Red Scarf Project donation scarf, however. I might even get it done in time for the December 15th deadline.
